Actually, if I understand the argument against gay marriage, it's essentially that gay marriage gives gay folks an option other than opposite-sex marriage. In other words, the marriages that are being "undermined" are MOM's.

It took me a long time to divine this. The proponents of this argument generally shy away from saying so in so many words... To argue this, of course, forces a discussion of the etiology of homosexuality (a complicated topic), and also begs for more nuanced discussions about the relationship between healthy sexual intimacy and long-term relationship success, etc. Neither of these discussions are really amenable to the sound-bite-style discussions that are the norm in American political debate...
